MPIC Immobilizer Program
Manitoba Public Insurance Corporation (MPIC) has launched an initiative to reduce the number of automobile thefts in Manitoba.
An immobilizer is a piece of equipment installed in your vehicle that disables the three main components of the engine. They are ignition, fuel and starter. Without the special Immobilizer key fob your vehicle cannot be started.
MPIC is offering a free installation of an Immobilizer in your vehicle if it is on the MPIC most at risk list. MPIC is also offering a $140 installation (half price) to those that are not on the list.
The immobilizer installation includes a flashing LED light, usually placed on or near the steering column. This light is not the same style or look as an alarm system warning LED. This means that as it stands right now a potential thief can tell at a glance whether your vehicle is protected by an immobilizer or an alarm, or both.
What you may not know is that a combination of immobilizer and remote starter and/or alarm system involves a somewhat complex installation. If you have an immobilizer installed before a remote start and/or alarm system the installation of these becomes a little more expensive, but it is an installation that we can perform.
If you are considering a remote start system or alarm get it installed before an immobilizer is installed. MPIC has additional charges for the installation of an immobilizer in an alarm and/or remote start equipped vehicle (at least $80). However, this charge is typically less than most shops charge to have an alarm or remote start system installed after the immobilizer. In many cases we can perform the installation for the same additional $80 or less.
